Georgia Access Open Enrollment 2027: Key Dates, Big Changes, and How to Choose a Plan

If you buy your own health insurance in Georgia (because you're self-employed, between jobs, working part-time, or your job doesn't offer coverage), open enrollment for 2027 is almost here. And this year, it really pays to shop instead of letting your plan roll over.

Let's go through the dates, what's changed, and a simple checklist so you can pick a plan with confidence.

Virginia S. Harris is a licensed Life and Health insurance agent.

Georgia Access Open Enrollment Dates for 2027 Coverage

Georgia runs its own state-based marketplace, Georgia Access (Georgia moved off HealthCare.gov starting with the 2025 plan year). Here are the dates Georgia Access has published:

DateWhat happens
Before Nov. 1, 2026Georgia Access sends renewal notices; most current enrollees are automatically re-enrolled
Nov. 1, 2026Open enrollment begins for 2027 coverage
Dec. 15, 2026Last day to enroll for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2027
Jan. 15, 2027Open enrollment ends; enrollments by this date generally start Feb. 1, 2027

Miss the window? You'll generally need a qualifying life event (like losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby) to get a special enrollment period.

What's Different This Year (Read This Before You Auto-Renew)

The enhanced premium tax credits are gone

From 2021 through 2025, extra-generous federal subsidies made marketplace coverage much cheaper. Congress didn't extend them, and they ended after 2025. As of this writing, no extension has been enacted for 2027.

That means:

  • People with incomes above 400% of the federal poverty level generally don't qualify for premium tax credits at all
  • People below that line can still get help, but often less than before

Premiums are going up again

Health policy researchers at the Commonwealth Fund report that insurers proposed a nationwide median increase of about 15% for 2027, after increases of more than 20% for 2026. In Georgia, healthinsurance.org reports proposed marketplace increases averaging about 20.7% before subsidies, with eight insurers expected for 2027. Final approved rates may differ, so check actual prices when you shop.

Your "same plan" might not be the same

Georgia Access reminds enrollees that last year's best plan may not be the best this year. Networks, drug lists, deductibles, and prices change. And if your insurer isn't offering plans in your area for 2027, you'll need to choose a new one.

Bronze plans and HSAs

Starting in 2026, Bronze and catastrophic plans are treated as HSA-compatible under the new federal tax law. If you pick a Bronze plan, you may be able to contribute to a Health Savings Account, which comes with tax advantages. (Yes, the tax lady is excited about this one.)

The Tax Side of Marketplace Coverage (Don't Skip This)

Here's where my two worlds collide. Marketplace subsidies are tax credits, and they get settled up on your tax return.

  • The premium tax credit you receive in advance is based on your estimated income for the year.
  • At tax time, you'll get Form 1095-A and reconcile on Form 8962.
  • New for tax year 2026 and after: If you got more advance credit than you qualified for, you must repay the full excess. The old repayment caps are gone.

That's a big deal for self-employed folks, gig workers, and anyone whose income bounces around. Estimate your income carefully, and report changes to Georgia Access during the year (new job, raise, marriage, new baby, move). It can save you from a nasty surprise in April.

Your Open Enrollment Checklist

  1. Read your renewal notice from Georgia Access and your insurer. Look for premium and financial assistance changes.
  2. Update your application with your best estimate of 2027 household income and household size.
  3. List your must-haves: doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions.
  4. Compare plans by total cost, not just premium: premium + deductible + copays + out-of-pocket maximum.
  5. Check Silver plans if your income is lower. Cost-sharing reductions are only available on Silver plans for people who qualify by income, which can lower deductibles and copays.
  6. Consider an HSA if you choose Bronze.
  7. Turn in verification documents fast if Georgia Access asks for proof of income, citizenship, or identity.
  8. Pick by Dec. 15 if you want coverage on Jan. 1.

Metal Levels in Plain English

Metal levelMonthly premiumWhat you pay when you get care
BronzeGenerally lowestGenerally highest (high deductibles)
SilverModerateModerate; may be much lower with cost-sharing reductions if eligible
GoldHigherLower

There's no "best" level, only the best fit for how much care you expect to use and what you can afford month to month.

Where to Get Help in Georgia

  • Georgia Access at georgiaaccess.gov, or call the Georgia Access Contact Center at 888-687-1503
  • A licensed agent can help you compare plans and walk through enrollment
  • Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids are available year-round if you qualify

Common Open Enrollment Mistakes to Avoid

  • Letting auto-renew do the work. Your plan's price, network, or drug list may have changed.
  • Choosing by premium alone. A low premium with a huge deductible can cost more if you need regular care.
  • Guessing at income. With full repayment of excess credits starting in tax year 2026, a lowball estimate can come back to bite you at tax time.
  • Missing the December 15 deadline and having a one-month gap in January.
  • Ignoring verification letters. If Georgia Access asks for documents and doesn't get them, your financial help can be affected.
  • Forgetting your 1095-A at tax time. You need it to file Form 8962 if you had marketplace coverage with advance credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is open enrollment for Georgia Access 2027?

November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027.

Will I be automatically re-enrolled in my Georgia Access plan?

Georgia Access says it will automatically re-enroll current enrollees into their existing plan ahead of open enrollment and send a notice, unless the insurer isn't offering plans in your area for 2027. You should still review and update your application.

Are the extra ACA subsidies still available in 2027?

As of mid-October 2026, the enhanced premium tax credits that ran from 2021 through 2025 have not been extended. Standard premium tax credits are still available for eligible people with incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level.

What happens if I underestimate my income for marketplace coverage?

Starting with tax year 2026, you must repay the full amount of any excess advance premium tax credit when you file your taxes. Report income changes to Georgia Access promptly to reduce that risk.

Can I enroll after January 15, 2027?

Only if you qualify for a special enrollment period because of a qualifying life event, or if you're eligible for Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids, which accept enrollment year-round.
